Pavel Lejdar, Ing. arch. Nikola Bisová A beautiful, generous plot surrounded by meadows on a south-facing slope of the Orlické Mountains. A house once stood here; today, only a faint trace of ruins remains—as is often the case in the Sudetenland. The client chose us based on our design for a cottage in the Jizera Mountains. Although we explored alternative options, the final proposal still clearly reflects its origin. We designed a timber structure with a simple archetype—a house set on a stone-clad plinth, topped with a gabled roof with generous overhangs, its ridge aligned with the contour line. From below, along the access road, the house remains understated. Aside from the round windows in the gables, it aims to blend in and grow naturally from the slope, much like the houses built by our predecessors. From above, where the terrace connects to the main living space, the ground floor is fully glazed on three sides, allowing the open landscape to flow into the interior. The glazed volume is subtly screened by a grid of naturally greying wooden boards, which extend across the other façades in varying orientations.

Lada Chromelová The villa house project is located in the historic part of Nový Lískovec in Brno, on a south-facing sloped site within a block of row housing with private inner gardens. The existing house, in poor technical condition, will be demolished and replaced with a new building. The proposed building contains 8 apartments (from 1-bedroom to 3-bedroom units) across three above-ground floors and one underground level. The basement includes parking spaces, storage units, technical facilities, and a shared sauna connected to the garden. The layout responds to the character of the site: the mezzanine level accommodates three of the largest apartments with private gardens, the first floor contains three apartments with terraces facing the courtyard, and the recessed top floor features two apartments with rooftop terraces. All apartments are accessible via a shared staircase and a barrier-free elevator. Important elements : 1 Context first The building mass is articulated to naturally relate to its surroundings, visually reducing its scale. Each floor steps back alternately towards the courtyard or the street. 2 Views and privacy The layout and façades carefully balance openness towards views, terraces, and gardens with privacy towards the street. Large French windows are complemented by parapets and solid terrace walls. With one exception, each apartment has either a private garden or a generous terrace. 3 Façade and architectural expression Despite the articulated massing, the façades are designed in a restrained manner, using muted cream tones and a regular window grid with subtle frames that relate to the surrounding historic context. The façades are further defined by delicate cornices and low terrace parapets. 4 Craft in detail, inside and out The subtle façade is complemented by crafted details, particularly unified metal railings for windows, terraces, and the interior staircase, giving the building its distinctive character.

Monika Danielová In the village centre of Herálec, within the landscape of the Žďárské vrchy, stands a protected historic building: a former shop with a living room and a barn. In recent years, however, it has suffered from insensitive interventions carried out without professional guidance. The new owner has chosen a careful rehabilitation—respecting both its heritage status and contemporary needs. The aim is to preserve its authentic character while creating a functional and welcoming place. The building will serve for recreation, small corporate events, and short-term rentals. Emphasis is placed on a close connection to nature—a sloping garden adjoins the house, complemented by an orchard and seasonal activities. Important elements : 1 The barn as the heart of the house The barn is open to the rafters, showcasing the massive stonework and original carpentry, creating a social space for gatherings. 2 Contextual addition of the plot The design also includes a new building with a gable roof, which is discreetly embedded in the terrain. It houses a parking space on the ground floor and two apartments on the first floor connected to the main garden. 3 Sensitive restoration and new layers The original mass and envelope of the building remain. Interventions, such as a new entrance hall, mini-wellness or terrace behind the house, respect the historical structure and complement it with functions that move the house towards today's use. 4 Material moderation and emphasis on craftsmanship The materials used: stone, stucco, oak floors, brick paving in the barn, follow local tradition. New elements, such as the black metal staircase, opt for simplicity and understatement.

Kusbachová In a modern cottage for a young couple in Třešt', the architects have managed to fit everything needed into a relatively small space while leaving its maximum potential. The investor's wish was to create a cottage from natural materials in Scandinavian style, so we chose larch wood for the facade. The main living space extends over two floors, with steps up to a cosy double bedroom that can be closed off with a sliding panel for maximum privacy. The living area features a sofa bed directly in front of a large folding window, so you have maximum contact with the terrace and the nature around you if you want. On the other side there is also a view of the garden. The heating of the cottage is provided by a wood-burning stove and infrared heating panels. The chalet is also equipped with a sauna and a built-in hot tub in the terrace above the pond. The cottage is designed in a low-energy standard and there are photovoltaic panels on the roof, which heat enough hot water from spring to autumn.

Jakub Vlček, Ing. arch. Monika Danielová, Ing. arch. Ondřej Jelínek, Ing. arch. Lada Chromelová The site in Břevnov remained vacant for a long time—as if waiting for a house that would understand its place. Filling the gap brought several challenges: a height difference between two streets, tight neighbouring conditions, a requirement for 12 parking spaces, and the need to protect the privacy of the inner block. The aim was to create a mixed-use urban house—with services at ground level, housing above, and a livable inner courtyard. The new building naturally follows the surrounding context—in height, rhythm, and its pitched roof. The street façade remains calm, while contemporary elements give the house a timeless character. Apartments of various sizes are also oriented towards the green inner courtyard with a shared garden. The garage is partially recessed and naturally lit. The building is designed to passive standard, with an emphasis on everyday comfort and sustainability. Important elements : 1 Filling in gaps The new building gently complements the street frontage and naturally responds to its scale and character – including the gable roof, cornice height, and the rhythm of the facade. 2 The double face of the house Traditional street and green courtyard – each facade reacts to its surroundings differently, but consistently. While the house is calm and structured towards the street, it opens up and comes alive towards the courtyard. 3 Greenery as a tool for climate and privacy The courtyard is designed to be vegetatively active – with flower boxes, trees and vertical greenery that shades, cools, dampens noise and defines private space. 4 Minimalism in details Metal linings, matching sheets and textured plaster form a finely articulated whole – what is important is not ostentatiousness, but precision and harmony. l RD Břevnov 13
